See a replay of asteroid's near-Earth flyby

NASA looks at the flyby of asteroid 2012 DA14 from several amateur observatories across Australia.

By Alan Boyle, Science Editor, NBC News

Asteroid 2012 DA14 has made its closest pass of Earth, just a scant 17,200 miles from our surface, and now astronomers are watching it recede harmlessly into the cosmos. You can watch it, too, thanks to a variety of webcasts.

The time of closest approach came at 2:25 p.m. ET, as scheduled, when the asteroid was zooming above the eastern Indian Ocean at a speed of almost 17,500 mph (7.8 kilometers per second). It was too dim to see with the naked eye, but observers in Australia, Asia and Europe could follow it with binoculars or small telescopes.

"It's on its way out now," said Paul Chodas, an astronomer with the Near-Earth Object Program Office at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. ?

Read:?Meteor vs. asteroid? Terms get tangled when describing space rocks?

Chodas and his colleagues monitored 2012 DA14 with high-powered optical telescopes and huge radar dishes to learn more about the asteroid's color, shape, spin and reflectivity. Such data could tell them what the object is made of, and perhaps provide insights into how similar objects could be diverted if they were on a threatening course.

Experts estimate that asteroids the size of 2012 DA14 hit our planet every 1,200 years or so, exploding with the energy of a 2.5-megaton atomic bomb: The last such impact struck a remote region of Siberia without warning in 1908, flattening 820 square miles of forest. If an object that big were to hit in just the wrong place, it could wipe out a city. Coincidentally, a much smaller space rock?came down over Russia on Friday, sparking a fireball and a glass-shattering shock wave.

Even though the 150-foot-wide (45-meter-wide) asteroid 2012 DA14 is the biggest object of its kind to be seen coming this close to Earth, its orbit is so well-known that NASA's Near-Earth Object Program can rule out any chance of collision in the foreseeable future. And even though 2012 flew 5,000 miles closer than satellites in geosynchronous orbit, NASA said its mostly south-to-north orbital path went through a "sweet spot" that kept it far away from those satellites ??as well as from other spacecraft that are in closer orbits, including the International Space Station.

Astronomer hope their observations of 2012 DA14 will provide insights into subtle phenomena such as seismic disturbances?that are induced by Earth's gravitational kick, or characteristics of the asteroid's spin that are affected by radiation absorption and emission.

This animated set of three images shows 2012 DA14 as it was observed by the Faulkes Telescope South in Australia on Feb. 14 at a distance of 465,000 miles. The asteroid is the moving bright spot in the middle. NASA's website provides details. Credit: LCOGT / E. Gomez / Faulkes South / Remanzacco Observatory.

Radar readings provide the best way to get a fix on the asteroid's shape and spin, in part because observations from multiple radio telescopes can be combined to produce a clearer picture. During the 2012 DA14 encounter, scientists used radio telescopes in California, New Mexico and Puerto Rico to produce new sets of radar imagery.

The first pictures from NASA's 230-foot (70-meter) dish at Goldstone, Calif., are due to be released on Saturday, and eventually those radar images will be combined to produce a 3-D map of the space rock.

Other telescopes, spread out from Australia to Israel to the Canary Islands to the U.S., gathered optical data ? and the images from some of those telescopes were shared over the Internet on Friday. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory has been passing along pictures from a variety of telescopes via its Ustream video channel. Here's a rundown of other post-encounter webcasts:

5 p.m. ET: The Virtual Telescope Project 2.0 presents live video of the asteroid flyby from a telescope in Italy, weather permitting. Video site: Watch Virtual Telescope Project's webcast.

6 p.m. ET: Weather permitting, the Clay Center Observatory in Massachusetts?will stream real-time, high-definition video from 6 p.m. ET until 4 a.m. ET Saturday. Watch Clay Center video on Ustream.

9 p.m. ET: Slooh Space Camera plans to present several live shows about the asteroid flyby, accompanied by expert commentary. Weather permitting, imagery will be beamed to Slooh HQ from telescopes on the Canary Islands and in Arizona. Watch the show on Slooh.com.

9 p.m. ET: A video feed of the flyby from a telescope at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center will be streamed for three hours. During the live-streaming event, viewers can ask researchers questions about the flyby via Twitter or the Ustream chat window. Watch Marshall's Ustream channel.

Chodas said the initial observations confirmed scientists' estimates of 2012 DA14's size, but other revelations will have to wait until astronomers have had a chance to analyze the data collected on Friday. By that time, the asteroid will be long gone. Earth's gravitational influence has changed 2012 DA14's orbit to keep it farther away from our planet during future orbits.

"It won't return for many, many years," he said.

Senate Republicans block vote on confirming Hagel as defense chief

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Senate voted narrowly on Thursday to block a vote on confirmation of President Barack Obama's choice of Chuck Hagel as defense secretary, planning another vote for February 26 - when it is expected to pass.

The tally was 58-40, with almost every Republican voting no, falling short of the 60 needed to pass a motion in the 100-seat chamber to stop debate and allow a vote by the full Senate on confirming the former Republican senator to the post.

The Senate's Democratic majority leader, Harry Reid, said the Senate would vote again on the motion on February 26, after it returns from a week-long recess. Republicans said they expected the motion would pass then, after they have had more time to consider the nomination, clearing the way for the full Senate to vote on Hagel's confirmation.

With Democrats controlling a majority of 55 votes in the Senate, Hagel's nomination is expected to win the simple majority of 51 votes it needs to be passed by the full Senate once such a vote is allowed.

American to unite with US Airways to create No.1 carrier

(Reuters) - AMR Corp and US Airways Group on Thursday sealed an $11 billion merger, but before they can welcome their first passenger onboard they have to get regulators to sign off and then integrate a web of intricate systems.

Creating what will become the world's largest airline, with 6,700 daily passengers, will require AMR's American Airlines and US Airways to unite two workforces totaling 113,000 and meld together reservation and baggage handling systems, computer networks, and terminals - a process that has complicated other marriages in the airline industry.

"So far it's just been pushing paper," said Robert Mann, head of R.W. Mann & Co of Port Washington, New York, which provides industry consulting and analysis. "The next 18 to 24 months is the hard work of implementation."

Integrating the airlines' reservations systems is a big challenge, said Basili Alukos, a Morningstar airline analyst. He said the previous US Airways and America West merger was "one of the worst" integrations in the industry, but that US Airways has likely learned from that experience.

"It seems as if (American-US Airways) has the benefit of history on its side," Alukos said, adding that the new American can learn from the growing pains of Delta-Northwest and United Continental.

United Continental Holdings Inc made a number of changes following its 2010 merger. As it shifted to a single reservations system and implemented other new processes, United's on-time arrivals suffered and mishandled baggage rates went up. United said in January that customer satisfaction scores were improving.

US Airways Chief Executive Doug Parker, who will head the newly merged company, said his experience with America West was a plus.

"Integrating airlines can be difficult sometimes, but we've (already) done one at US Airways," he told Reuters. "We know what to do and know what mistakes to avoid."

Labor integration could also be a challenge for the new American, where union representation issues will need to be resolved.

"The good news is the people they have in the unions now are trying to work with the company," said Darryl Jenkins, chairman of the American Aviation Institute in Washington. "I think they will be able to get through labor issues reasonably quickly now."

MIXED RESULTS FOR CONSUMERS

The tie-up is the fourth major merger in the U.S. airline industry since 2008, when Delta Air Lines bought Northwest. United and Continental merged in 2010, and Southwest Airlines bought discount rival AirTran Holdings in 2011.

The merger could help speed up the recovery of the U.S. airline industry as carriers will have more power to boost fares as yet another competitor is eliminated.

"Wall Street has been enamored of consolidation from an industry perspective because it will help control capacity," said George Hamlin, president of Hamlin Transportation Consulting.

Leisure travelers are likely to feel the pinch of higher fares and service cuts more than business passengers.

The tieup could be a net plus for corporate passengers, who will have to pay higher prices but also will benefit as the three biggest airlines compete to improve their services and networks in hopes of winning more of these lucrative customers.

Competition for the business traveler has already ramped up, especially in key cities such as New York, where Delta has expanded at LaGuardia Airport and is upgrading facilities at John F. Kennedy International Airport to better compete with United's strong presence in Newark, New Jersey.

"The competition for corporate accounts has never been more acute and aggressive," said Mann.

But U.S. leisure passengers could find bargains harder to come by as the bigger airlines look to sell fewer lower-priced seats, he added.

Morningstar's Alukos said he expects prices to rise overall in wake of the merger. Leisure passengers in larger markets will likely find more flight choices, but those in smaller cities might not be so lucky.

"Those passengers in smaller markets will lose some service or they will have to pay higher rates because there will be fewer flights" as the big airlines continue to curb unprofitable or less-traveled routes, Alukos said.

Still, for US Airways customers, the deal will bring a broader choice of international flight destinations as the combined carrier leverages its membership in the oneworld global alliance. Its members include Asia's Cathay Pacific , Japan Airlines as well as Australia's Qantas .

New routes are expected, particularly in Asia, starting with Dallas-Forth Worth to Seoul later this year, Horton said.

ALL-STOCK DEAL

Far from being secret, as most mergers are, the US Airways-American deal is one of the most telegraphed in history. The deal was seen as an inevitability for so long that some labor unions have already struck deals with the two airlines on what will take place following a combination.

The all-stock deal gives creditors of the bankrupt American Airlines parent control of the combined airline, and is subject to approvals from U.S. and European regulators and the U.S. Bankruptcy Court.

At a press conference on Thursday at the Dallas-Forth Worth airport, Parker and AMR CEO Tom Horton said that there would be minimal job losses, mostly at the management level because the two airlines are "complementary."

Parker said the two airlines share only 12 of 900 routes with American, and that he expects no issues with regulatory authorities. To preserve competition, U.S. antitrust regulators typically require airlines to sell overlapping routes before approving a merger.

The tie-up with American marks a comeback for Parker, 51, perhaps the most vocal proponent of industry consolidation but who repeatedly got passed over as a marriage partner as rivals merged in recent years.

US Air's management team, led by Parker, will assume operational control of the airline, while AMR creditors will wind up owning 72 percent of the combined carrier and take five seats on the 12-member board.

US Airways will have four seats on the board. The remaining seats will be filled by AMR representatives.

Tom Horton, who became AMR's CEO when it filed for bankruptcy, will serve as chairman of the combined airline through the first annual meeting of shareholders, after which Parker will take over.

"It has been the most successful airline restructuring in history, and we had been very focused from the outset on creating the most value for our owners," Horton told Reuters.

The new combined airline, which will carry the American Airlines name, will be 2 percent larger than current No. 1 United Continental in terms of traffic - the number of miles flown by paying passengers worldwide, and will be based in Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas.

The new, larger American Airlines would return to the leadership position among U.S. carriers that it ceded in recent years as high labor costs made it difficult to compete with restructured rivals.

A combined American-US Airways would have revenue of about $39 billion, based on 2012 figures, ahead of United Continental, which had revenue of about $37 billion.

DEAL DRIVERS

US Airways stockholders will receive one share of common stock of the combined airline for each US Airways share, the companies said in a statement.

US Airways shareholders will get 28 percent of the equity of the combined airline. The remaining 72 percent will be issuable to stakeholders of AMR and its debtor subsidiaries, American's labor unions and current AMR employees.

Jack Butler, an attorney for AMR's creditors' committee called the deal "unprecedented." In US Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan on Thursday, Butler said that AMR shareholders would get 3.5 percent of the reorganized equity, which he forecast as between $350 million and $400 million. It's rare for shareholders to get any recovery after a bankruptcy.

The two companies said they expect $1.2 billion in one-time transition costs, spread over the next three years.

Annual savings from the merger should grow to more than $1 billion by 2015, the companies said.

Rothschild is financial adviser to American Airlines. Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP, Jones Day, Paul Hastings, Debevoise & Plimpton LLP and K&L Gates LLP are providing legal counsel.

Barclays and Millstein & Co are financial advisers to US Airways, while Latham & Watkins LLP, O'Melveny & Myers, Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft LLP, and Dechert LLP are serving as legal counsel.

Moelis & Co and Mesirow Financial are financial advisers to the unsecured creditors. Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP and Togut, Segal & Segal LLP are the creditors' legal counsel.

US Airways shares closed Thursday down 4.6 percent at $13.99.

Folic acid supplements early in pregnancy may reduce child's risk of autism by 40 percent

Folic acid supplements early in pregnancy may reduce child's risk of autism by 40 percent

Wednesday, February 13, 2013

Prenatal folic acid supplements appear to reduce the risk for autistic spectrum disorders, according to a study published today (February 13) in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that about 1 in 88 children in the U.S. have been identified with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). ASDs are amongst the most heritable of mental disorders, but little is known about how the disorder develops. Consequently, methods for diagnosis, prevention, and treatment are limited.

Folic acid (Vitamin B9) is required for DNA synthesis and repair in the human body, and its naturally occurring form?folate?is found in leafy vegetables, peas, lentils, beans, eggs, yeast, and liver. Taking folic acid supplements during early pregnancy is known to protect against spina bifida and other neural tube defects in children. In the United States, Canada, and Chile, folic acid is added to flour, so as to automatically provide these supplements to consumers. Norway does not enrich its flour, and since 1998, the Norwegian Directorate of Health has recommended that all women planning to become pregnant take a daily supplement of folic acid from one month before the start of pregnancy through the first trimester.

Despite this policy, studies from North America and Europe have shown that many pregnant women have a lower dietary intake of folate than what is necessary to prevent neural tube defects.

The report in JAMA emerged from the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study (MoBa) and its sub-study of autism, the Autism Birth Cohort (ABC) Study. This international collaboration (see list of members below) comprises the largest prospective birth cohort devoted to the investigation of gene-environment interactions and biomarker discovery for neuropsychiatric disorders.

A total of 85,176 MoBa babies?born from 2002-2008?and their parents participated in the study. Prenatal dietary habits were recorded, and families were regularly surveyed for 3-10 years to measure the development of autism spectrum disorders. A total of 270 cases of autism spectrum disorders were identified in the study population (114 autistic disorder; 56 Asperger syndrome; 100 atypical or unspecified autism; i.e., pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified, PDD-NOS).

Mothers who took folic acid supplements in early pregnancy had a 40% reduced risk of having children with autistic disorder compared with mothers who did not take folic acid. The reduction in risk was observed in those who took folic acid during the time interval from 4 weeks before to 8 weeks after the start of pregnancy. Autistic disorder is the most severe form of autism spectrum disorders in children. No reduction in risk was observed for PDD-NOS. For Asperger syndrome, the number of children was too low to obtain sufficient statistical power in the analyses.

The use of folic acid in early pregnancy increased substantially from 2002 to 2008 among women who participated in MoBa. In 2002, 43% of mothers took folic acid supplements; by 2008, 85% of mothers did. However, many women began taking folic acid later than recommended, and only half started before the beginning of pregnancy.

The timing of a mother's intake of folate appears to be a critical factor. Her child's risk of autism was reduced only when the supplements were taken between 4 weeks before to 8 weeks after the start of pregnancy.

"We examined the rate of autism spectrum disorders in children born to mothers who did or did not take folic acid during pregnancy. There was a dramatic reduction in the risk of autistic disorder in children born to mothers who took folic acid supplements," says P?l Sur?n, first author and epidemiologist at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health (NIPH).

The researchers also analyzed whether the risk of autistic disorder was influenced by the use of other dietary supplements. They did not find any association between the mother's use of fish oil supplements (cod liver oil and omega-3 fatty acids) in early pregnancy and the risk of autistic disorder, and no association for the mother's use of other vitamins and minerals.

In recent years, researchers have started to investigate whether folic acid has other beneficial effects on the development of the fetus' brain and spinal cord. A study of language development from MoBa, published in 2011, showed that children whose mothers took folic acid supplements in early pregnancy had only half the risk of severe language delay at age three years compared with other children. A separate 2011 study from the University of California, Davis, demonstrated a lower risk of autism spectrum disorders in children of mothers who had used prenatal vitamin supplements during pregnancy. Prenatal vitamin supplements contain folic acid in combination with other vitamins and minerals.

Joint senior author Ezra Susser, professor of Epidemiology at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health and professor of Psychiatry at the College of Physicians and Surgeons, stated, "Our findings extend earlier work on the significance of folate in brain development and raise the possibility of an important and inexpensive public health intervention for reducing the burden of autism spectrum disorders."

"This elegant work illustrates the power of the ABC cohort for not only chipping away at the riddle of what causes autism, but for developing new methods for early recognition, prevention and treatment," says W. Ian Lipkin, John Snow Professor of Epidemiology at the Mailman School of Public Health and principal investigator of the ABC cohort.

Shape Your Beach Body The Healthy Way (guest blog)

At the outset of a new year, many people like to focus on fitness efforts, trying to get healthier and improve their bodies. However, as the winter months drift by and beach season?creeps ever closer, it becomes even more of a priority for many of these people to improve their health and physical appearance. However, as you set about preparing your body for your next swimsuit shopping trip to Marks and Spencer, it is important to approach your health in an appropriate manner.

We hear a lot every year about the newest diets people are trying. People all over the world are always looking for easier and more effective ways to drop weight and stay healthy, and this results in dietary trends that shift so frequently they?re hard to keep track of. However, while many diets have very healthy aspects, most fail to completely address your health and fitness needs. So this year, instead of trying the hottest new diet to prepare your beach body, try something a bit simpler and more sustainable: just exercise and eat right! Here are a few tips to get you started.

Couple Having Drinks

Exercise

For many people, the exercise solution to weight loss efforts is, ultimately, excess. Run more, swim more, bike more, etc. However, while these exercise techniques will certainly burn calories and help you to lose weight, excessive practice of cardio activities is actually an inefficient exercise routine. Instead, try working in some resistance training. When you lift weights, you are actually breaking down muscular structure, which is then repaired and rebuilt stronger than before. However, during this reconstruction process, your body?s metabolism skyrockets, meaning you burn calories more efficiently during that time period. In this way, resistance training, in addition to cardio efforts, can help you to shed pounds more quickly.

Nutrition

The majority of nutrition efforts focus on getting you to eat the right foods and avoid the others. Some diets focus on eliminating salts or sugars, some focus on cutting carbohydrates, and still others focus on unique blends of healthy foods. Instead of focusing on these ideas ? which are difficult to follow through on ? focus instead on the meals you already eat, and how to make each one just a bit healthier. For example, instead of eating a sandwich at lunch, put the same ingredients in a lettuce wrap ? it will taste the same while cutting bread, which can lead to weight loss. Try swapping juices for sodas, or fruits for desserts, to satisfy your sweet tooth. These are the types of small changes that can, all put together, aid in weight loss, without giving you a strict or difficult diet plan to stick to.
